Site Plan Coordinate and Measurement Checklist

Quick answer

Keep survey facts separate from preliminary site modeling; verify units, benchmarks, boundaries, and local setbacks before relying on a site plan.

Avoid confusing survey data, property boundaries, terrain approximations, and building setbacks in site plans.

Identify the authoritative source

Obtain boundary, elevation, and benchmark information from the appropriate survey or civil documentation. A screenshot or imported image is not a substitute for validated property data.

Confirm units and reference points

Before importing any measurements, verify whether values are expressed in feet, inches, meters, or another unit and identify the reference datum. Check at least two known dimensions after import.

Separate modeling assumptions

Mark approximate slopes, landscaping, and existing objects as provisional where they have not been measured. Use clear notes to prevent concept representations from being interpreted as surveyed facts.

Review setbacks and constraints

Determine which local rules, easements, or site constraints apply; these vary by jurisdiction. A model can visualize a possible layout but cannot certify that the placement is permitted.

Coordinate the exported plan

Cross-check proposed building position, dimensions, north direction, notes, and reference levels against the latest drawings before sharing.

Practical final checklist

  • Save a dated backup or review copy before changing an active project.
  • Check information against the relevant current software documentation and local project requirements.
  • Test changes on a representative file, then inspect the resulting drawings and exports.
  • Record unresolved questions and obtain qualified professional review when the deliverable requires it.
