Floor Plan Dimension Accuracy Checklist

Quick answer

Accurate dimensions require checking model geometry first, then reviewing annotation settings and printed output; dimension strings alone do not guarantee a correct plan.

Check room sizes, wall thickness, reference dimensions, and output scale in residential plans.

Check geometry before annotations

Verify wall alignment, thickness, and the position of openings in the model. A dimension that displays the expected number can still reference the wrong face or point.

Identify what each dimension measures

Distinguish finished-face clearances, framing dimensions, centerlines, and overall outside dimensions. Make this convention explicit when another trade will rely on the sheet.

Cross-check critical locations

Pay special attention to stairs, bathrooms, corridors, cabinet runs, and structural openings where small discrepancies have practical consequences. Confirm relevant constraints with the appropriate drawings and professionals.

Resolve conflicting strings

Check whether repeated dimensions agree when a room appears on multiple drawings. Remove obsolete manual notes after geometry changes instead of silently carrying them forward.

Verify scale on exported sheets

Review paper size, viewport scale, and print scaling separately. Test one known dimension on a PDF or printed sheet before releasing a package.

Practical final checklist

  • Save a dated backup or review copy before changing an active project.
  • Check information against the relevant current software documentation and local project requirements.
  • Test changes on a representative file, then inspect the resulting drawings and exports.
  • Record unresolved questions and obtain qualified professional review when the deliverable requires it.
